History:

While most of our cabins are named after ghost towns and mines, Pitkin is a town that still functions today. It is said this town, founded in 1879, was the first mining town west of the Continental Divide. Originally named Quartzville, the town name was changed in honor of Colorado Governor Frederick Pitkin. The original town was burned down in a large fire in 1898, but was rebuilt and adjusted to become a lumber town for the local coal mines. This allowed it to remain a booming area until the 1950’s when residents began to move away in search of better opportunities.
